Virginia Saltwater Fishing: The Place To Land Trophy Sized Flounders
Virginia saltwater fishing is sure to throw up interesting numbers of flounders and it is the reason why saltwater anglers love Virginia for their saltwater fishing. There may be much other game that provides competition, but the flounder steals the show and attracts more and more people into trying out the Virginia saltwater fishing experience. This is quite a new phenomenon as just ten or so years back, it was not always easy to go Virginia saltwater fishing and land big fish. Helped by proper management practices along the Virginia and Atlantic coast, there has been a bit of a swing towards better fishing opportunities that has helped Virginia saltwater fishing immensely. A case in point is the Chesapeake Bay where, in the recent past, anglers to Virginia saltwater fishing were rewarded when they began to land many flatfish that make for wonderful trophies.

Things For You To Consider

As recently as 2005, Virginia saltwater fishing helped land, it is believed, 902 flounder that weighed seven pounds or more which was, for Virginia, its best year as far as flounder citations were concerned. This, in spite of the fact that flounder fishing in the bay was not as great as in previous years, according to the Virginia Saltwater fishing Tournament. For recreation, there is probably no better place than Virginia saltwater fishing where flounders are concerned, and with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel coming up, there have been more as well as bigger flounders to catch. Due to refined techniques, anglers that visited Virginia saltwater fishing places such as Chesapeake Bay have been able to land bigger catches of flounder.

Anglers can also make use of big live bait such as spots, croakers and menhaden that measure two to three inches more than the minnows and “peanut” bunker that are normally employed. When it is May, one can expect large specimens of game fish coming into North America’s huge estuary, and Virginia saltwater fishing anglers will be seen waiting for their favorites including the red and black drum along with striped bass. Places such as Smith Point make it easy to catch the early spring trophies. Known as the “Northern Neck” this is an ideal place to catch post-spawn fish that come in from the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers.

You can also get some great saltwater fishing at the Northern Neck Reef that is another six miles east of the Great Wicomico River Light.
